Ruffino presents Garzaia Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2023, the first Bolgheri Superiore in the history of the estate, produced exclusively from estate-owned vineyards. This new wine marks a significant milestone for the historic Tuscan winery and embodies its ambition within one of the world’s most prestigious wine regions.
The Garzaia project was born in 2023, when Ruffino announced the acquisition of vineyards in the Bolgheri appellation, located along the Livorno coast. With only 75 producers, Bolgheri DOC is widely regarded as a benchmark for Tuscan wines in a Bordeaux-inspired style. It was here that Ruffino set out to create a wine capable of interpreting the territory through an authentic and distinctive vision.
Garzaia Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2023 is produced exclusively from vineyards in Le Sondraie, in the northern part of the Bolgheri appellation. The area is characterised by deep, well-structured soils with a sandy-clay composition and low limestone content – ideal conditions for international varieties.
The blend reflects the classic identity of Bolgheri: 70% Cabernet Franc, providing structure, depth and aromatic complexity, complemented by Merlot, which adds softness, roundness and harmony.
The 2023 growing season in Bolgheri was marked by consistently sunny days and stable weather. A single heavy rainfall at the end of August replenished soil water reserves, helping the vines withstand summer heat and allowing for slow, even grape ripening.
The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barriques, 70% new and 30% second-use barrels, a regimen designed to respect the terroir while enhancing the expression of each variety.
“Garzaia stands for elegance and finesse, and it clearly encapsulates Bolgheri,” concludes winemaker Olga Fusari.

The name Garzaia refers to a nesting site where herons gather and live in close proximity, coexisting in harmony in a delicate balance between land and water. It evokes the spirit of Bolgheri itself – a territory deeply connected to its history, landscape and natural equilibrium.
Garzaia is crafted under the direction of Olga Fusari, Senior Winemaker at Ruffino, who joined the company in October 2023. Despite her young age, she brings more than two decades of experience and is a graduate in Viticulture and Oenology from the University of Florence.
Before joining Ruffino, Fusari spent 18 years at Ornellaia, where she developed extensive expertise in Bordeaux-style blends. She began her career there in 2005 as a harvest intern while completing her studies, later becoming Assistant Winemaker and a member of the official Bolgheri DOC tasting panel. In 2016, she was appointed Chief Winemaker at Ornellaia.
Her international experience includes winemaking work in Argentina at Bodega Rolland, advanced studies through a Master of Vineyard and Winery Management at Bordeaux Sciences Agro, and a winemaking experience in New Zealand at Selaks Winery in 2025.
Today, Olga Fusari is responsible for Ruffino’s fine wines from Bolgheri, as well as for the estates of Poggio Casciano, near Florence, and La Solatia in Monteriggioni, overseeing wines such as Modus, Modus Primo, Alauda and La Solatia IGT Toscana.

Garzaia Bolgheri Superiore DOC will be released on 1 March 2026, joining Ruffino’s portfolio of fine wines alongside iconic labels such as Riserva Ducale Oro Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG and Greppone Mazzi Brunello di Montalcino DOCG.
This release further strengthens Ruffino’s presence in Tuscany’s most renowned wine-growing areas – a journey that began nearly 150 years ago and continues to be guided by a commitment to Tuscan excellence.
