This summer, Burgundy – that intricate mosaic of climats, limestone and centuries‑old savoir‑faire – welcomed a group of Ukrainian winemakers whose presence felt both symbolic and quietly momentous.
Their visit to Burgundy was part of a professional tour organised by Drinks+, guided by Aleksandra Minenko‑Decamps – Wine Travel Awards ambassador and one of the top wine guides recognised by the WTA community. Her deep knowledge of Burgundy, combined with her ability to connect cultures through wine, shaped the experience into something far more meaningful than a technical study trip.
The itinerary offered Ukrainian producers a rare opportunity to observe how one of the world’s most revered wine regions continues to evolve. Even in a period of global market contraction, Burgundy demonstrates a paradoxical vitality – a phenomenon that intrigued the visiting group and sparked thoughtful conversations in cellars, tasting rooms and vineyard paths.
For Ukrainian winemakers, many of whom work under the pressure of war, logistical uncertainty and the emotional weight of defending their homeland, Burgundy became a place of reflection. Standing among the grand cru slopes, they were reminded that wine is always more than a beverage – it is identity and a form of cultural resistance.
Their presence in Dijon on August 24, during the celebration of Ukraine’s Independence Day, added another layer of meaning. Wines from Valery Narovilo, BIG WINES, My Wine by Eduard Gorodetsky, SHABO, Leleka Wines, GIGI Wine House and the meadery Medovyi Spas were poured for French guests who approached the tasting tables with curiosity and genuine warmth. The wines spoke for themselves: confident, expressive, modern and unmistakably Ukrainian.
For Wine Travel Awards, this moment encapsulates the essence of wine tourism: the exchange of cultures, the discovery of new identities and the celebration of human resilience through the lens of wine. The fact that these winemakers had travelled through Burgundy earlier this year – learning, tasting, debating – under the guidance of a WTA ambassador, made their return to France as representatives of Ukrainian wine all the more poignant.
Wine tourism thrives on stories, and Ukraine’s story today is one of courage and a determination to remain part of the world’s vinous dialogue. Burgundy heard that story.
